Butler

A butler leads the service of the house: receiving guests, managing the table and the cellar, caring for fine things and setting the standard for the household team.

What the role covers

Providing formal and informal service at the table and when entertaining.

Receiving and looking after guests, and coordinating the household for events.

Caring for silver, glassware, china and the wine cellar, and valeting and wardrobe care where required.

Supervising and training other household staff, and maintaining standards of presentation throughout the house.

How we recruit and vet

Every candidate is interviewed, and we take up references from recent employers directly rather than relying on written letters alone. We check identity and the right to work in the UK, and verify the qualifications and experience a candidate claims.

We assess service standards in interview and, where useful, through a practical trial in the household. A probationary period is recommended so that both the family and the butler can confirm the fit.
